O Christmas Tree
My absolute favorite time of the year to decorate is Christmas. When I was young, we had 2 trees, a formal tree and a family memory tree. Under the formal tree we set up a snow village scene as the tree skirt and I looked forward to getting to set it up each year.
Fast forward to now that we have children. We put up at least 6 trees in our house alone each year and I rarely decorate them the same each year. Just like when I was growing up, our family’s favorite tree to decorate is the one we decorate as a family, our Family Memory tree. We are all about making memories as a family and reminiscing about some of those memories as we decorate each year.
It is our hope that your time at Lazy River Cottage is filled with wonderful memories to treasure for years to come. When we started thinking about decorating the cottage, we wanted to create the feeling of home.
The rustic touch of wood, combined with strung popcorn and wood beads provided an excellent start to creating this relaxed comfortable feeling of home.
A few years ago I decided to try putting grapevine in a tree and I loved the texture it brought to the tree. I decided this would be a perfect start for our cottage’s tree. We took an inexpensive grapevine wreath, took it apart, and used it in our tree as a garland. We also added some red wooden beads and this popcorn garland from Hobby Lobby that I fell in love with this year.
I always love a good plaid for the holidays, and I wanted to use plaid in a different way this year. I wanted to try and combine multiple plaids together to create a relaxed comfortable feeling. I chose to use 3 complimentary plaid ribbons on this tree.
After the ribbon, I added the larger items to fill in the gaps. I found these fun plaid and burlap poinsettias last year at Old Time Pottery for only $1 each. I love that they provide another layer of plaid to the mix.
We love having the opportunity to have my dad’s deer mounts in the living room of the cottage. Our daughter said they make the house look “Mentone”. We know what she meant and we agree. A few years ago, I decorated my sister-in-law’s tree with real deer antlers from their collection and when I saw these antlers this year, I decided to add a few to this tree too. I didn’t want the antlers to stand out too much so I also added greenery to soften the look.
After the larger items filled in the gaps. All that was left was a few ornaments. The silver plaid ornaments were a great way to add a final layer of plaid. With so much variation of plaid, I wanted to provide a single color as the remaining ornaments. We used 4 different styles and shades of round red balls to finish up.
The Christmas tree alone wasn’t going to be enough to create that feeling of home. No balcony is compete this time of year without a beautiful garland accent. We used some inexpensive plain garland we’ve had for years and doubled it up to make it thicker. We used 64’ of garland in total and added some berries, lights, and bows to complete the look.
What says Christmas more than stockings hung by the fire. We also wanted to provide a mantle ready for your stocking to be hung by the fire. We welcome you to bring your stockings and make yourself at home.
It is our hope your time at Lazy River Cottage provides your family with wonderful memories this Christmas season. Merry Christmas from Lazy River Cottage.
